HYBRIT: Milestone reached – pilot facility for hydrogen storage up and running
SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall’s HYBRIT pilot facility for the storage of fossil-free hydrogen gas is now in operation in Luleå. The rock cavern storage facility is the first of its kind in the world for storing fossil-free hydrogen gas.

HYBRIT: A unique, underground, fossil-free hydrogen gas storage facility is being inaugurated in Luleå
SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall are inaugurating HYBRIT’s pilot facility for fossil-free hydrogen gas storage at Svartöberget in Luleå, Sweden. The rock cavern storage facility is the first of its kind in the world. The inauguration ceremony marks the start of the two-year test period, which will run until 2024.

Kadri Simson, European Commissioner for Energy, visits the HYBRIT pilot plant in Luleå during her visit to Sweden, to experience the world’s first completely fossil-free value chain for iron and steel production. HYBRIT is jointly owned by SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall.

HYBRIT: SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall first in the world with hydrogen-reduced sponge iron
SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall have now produced the world’s first hydrogen-reduced sponge iron at a pilot scale. The technological breakthrough in the HYBRIT initiative captures around 90% of emissions in conjunction with steelmaking and is a decisive step on the road to fossil-free steel.

HYBRIT: SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall building unique pilot project in Luleå for large-scale hydrogen storage investing a quarter of a billion Swedish kronor
SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall have commenced building a rock cavern storage facility for fossil-free hydrogen gas on a pilot scale next to HYBRIT’s pilot facility for direct reduction in Luleå, North of Sweden. This is an important step in the development of a fossil-free value chain for fossil-free steel.

SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall are now taking a new, decisive leap forward in their work to make fossil-free steel for the global market. Industrialization of the technology being developed through HYBRIT will start in Gällivare, northern Sweden, where the world’s first production plant for fossil-free sponge iron – from feedstock to steel – is being planned.
